Women's Basketball Rally Falls Short

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - - Southern Miss' Deondra Carter had 25 points and nine rebounds to leads the Golden Eagles to a 68-51 win over the Tulane women's basketball team at Reed-Green Coliseum on Saturday.
Tulane drops to 7-7 overall with the loss, and starts Conference USA play with an 0-1 record. Southern Miss improved to 13-1 overall and is 1-0 in league action.
Southern Miss took a 32-16 lead at the break as the Green Wave struggled to just 27.6 percent shooting in the opening stanza. The Wave rallied in the second half, trimming a 25-point deficit to just 10 with 1:38 left, but could get no closer as Southern Miss scored six straight points en route to the 17-point win.
Lakethia Hampton led the Green Wave with 16 points and five rebounds, while senior Kelly Nadeau added 11 points and four assists. Freshman Jami Montagnino added 10 points off the bench for Tulane.
Tulane hit 43.8 percent of their shots in the second half (14-of-32), but was out-rebounded 39-24. The Wave forced 18 USM turnovers and converted those into 17 points. Tulane also had a 16-10 edge in bench points.
The Green Wave return to action on Friday, Jan. 16, as the Green Wave play host to Conference USA rival East Carolina at Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
