Women's Basketball Rally Comes Up Short

The Tulane women's basketball team rallied from a 21-point deficit in the second half, but could not overcome defending Conference USA champion Charlotte, as the 49ers claimed a 72-61 win over the Green Wave at Fogelman Arena on Sunday.
Charlotte won its fourth straight to improve to 11-6 overall and 4-0 in league action, while Tulane lost for the third consecutive contest to fall to 7-9 overall and 0-3 in C-USA play.
The 49ers led 55-34 at the 16:28 mark of the second half, but Tulane fought back with a 19-7 run to cut the lead to just nine, 62-53, with 5:27 left. The teams traded baskets, but the Wave could get no closer as Charlotte pushed its advantage to 15 with just under a minute remaining to seal the win.
Junior Lakethia Hampton recorded her second straight double-double, and third in the last four games, with 16 points and 10 rebounds to pace Tulane. Hampton also added five steals. Sophomore guard D'Aundra Henry recorded 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals for the Wave.
Charlotte took a 46-31 lead into the locker room thanks to some hot shooting, especially behind the three-point line. The 49ers were 17-of-28 (60.7 percent) in the first half and hit 7-of-13 three-pointers (53.8 percent). Leading 24-16, Charlotte outscored Tulane 22-12 over the next 10 minutes to build a 46-28 cushion before taking the 15-point lead into the half.
Peaches Harris led Charlotte with 22 points and six rebounds, while Sakelleie Daniels added 14 points and six assists. Monica League also reached double figures, chipping in 10 points four rebounds and four steals.
Charlotte hit half of their shots for the game (26-of-52), while Tulane was 25-of-62 from the floor (40.3 percent). The teams were nearly equal on turnovers, Tulane had 22 while the 49ers recorded 20, but Charlotte turned the Wave's miscues into 28 points, while the Wave only managed seven points off of 49ers turnovers.
Tulane returns to action next weekend as part of a two-game road trip. The Wave will face Conference USA foe Marquette on Friday in Milwaukee, Wis., before travelling to Chicago to face DePaul on Sunday.
