CHICAGO, Ill. - - After Tulane played practically even with No. 16 DePaul in the first half, the Blue Demons used a strong second half to post a 99-60 win over the Green Wave women's basketball team at the DePaul Athletic Center on Sunday.
Tulane falls to 7-11 overall with the loss and is 0-5 in Conference USA play. DePaul won its ninth consecutive contest to improve to 18-1 overall and 6-0 in league action.
Lakethia Hampton, Jami Montagnino and D'Aundra Henry all scored career highs for Tulane, but it was not enough to overcome three DePaul players with 20 or more points.
DePaul jumped out to a fast start in the opening stanza, scoring the first 11 points of the contest, but Tulane rallied to within just three at the break. The Blue Demons led 24-9 at the 12:42 mark before the Wave scored seven straight to trim the lead to just eight. The teams traded baskets, and DePaul slowly increased its lead to 12, 38-26, with 3:37 left. However, Tulane outscored the Blue Demons 10-1 to close out the half to trim the DePaul lead to just 39-36 at the break.
In the second half, though, it was all DePaul as the Blue Demons outscored the Wave 60-24 after intermission.
Hampton tied her career high with 24 points and added 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double in the last six contests. Montagnino added 13 points and seven rebounds and Henry had 12 points and four assists for the Wave.
Khara Smith led DePaul with 26 points and 14 rebounds, while Charlene Smith had 22 points and nine boards. Ashley Luke added 21 points for the Blue Demons.
DePaul had a 48-39 edge in rebounding and scored 23 second-chance points. The Demons also had a 36-14 edge in points off turnovers.
Tulane returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 31, as the Green Wave play host to Conference USA rival Memphis. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. CST at Fogelman Arena in a game that will be part of a doubleheader with the Green Wave men.
