KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Alison Walshe shot even-par 71 and senior Alexis Wooster shot a season-low, two-over par 73 as the Tulane University women's golf team finished tied for second in the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship Sunday afternoon at the par-71, 5,932-yard Cherokee Country Club.
The Green Wave - one of eight participating teams that entered the weekend ranked in the Top 25 by Golfweek Magazine - shot a team 292 in the final round to finish the event with a season-best 881 (298-291-292) to finish tied with host Tennessee (309-290-282). Tulane finished just seven strokes off the lead as Ohio State won the team title with an 874 (293-287-294). Walshe, meanwhile, finished second in the individual race with a one-under par 212 (71-70-71).
"We competed very well today," head coach Sue Bower said. "We knew we had to play extremely well simply to maintain our position in the standings, and we were actually able to cut into Ohio State's lead. We fell short of a team title, but this is a tremendous showing against a very talented field.
"Alison Walshe has been nothing short of spectacular since she's been here. I knew she was good when she decided to transfer from Boston College, but I never saw this coming. She has been Ms. Consistency and I'm proud of the way she and the rest of the team has played all year."
Wooster (76-78-73) was a key factor in the Green Wave's finish, overcoming a 78 in the second round to post her lowest round of the year to finish tied for 32nd. In addition to Wooster's efforts, the trio of sophomore Mary Ellen Jacobs (75-73-74), junior Liliana Alvarez (76-73-74) and senior Lindsay Hulwick (77-75-74) each shot three-over par 74s to finish tied for 10th, tied for 16th and tied for 28th, respectively.
Participating as an individual, junior Jessica Issler finished tied for 59th with a 236 (76-76-84).
The Green Wave finished six strokes ahead of fourth-placed Kent State (296-302-289=887) and 17 shots better than fifth-placed LSU (302-297-299=898). Tennessee's Violeta Retamoza edged Walshe by just one shot for medalist honors, finishing the event with an even-par 71 on Sunday to close out the weekend with a two-under par 211 (72-68-71).
Following this weekend, the Green Wave will enjoy a bit of a break before returning to the links on Oct. 29 for the Landfall Tradition Collegiate in Wilmington, N.C.
