AUBURN, Ala. - Running in its largest field of the year, the Tulane women's cross country team took ninth place and the men earned 16th at the annual Auburn Invitational Monday morning at the Indian Pines Golf Course.
The Green Wave women were led by freshman Rachel Bryan who covered the five-kilometer course in 19:00.99 to earn 16th place among 163 competitors. On the men's side, sophomore Tyler Chapman paced the Wave with a 59th-place finish in the 185-runner field.
Freshman Aubrey Phillips registered a 26th-place finish for the women, recording a time of 19:26.24, while junior Lisa Green was 34th at 19:46.36. Senior Sarah Bumby and freshman Helen Kenworthy rounded out the scorers for Tulane in 71st and 92nd place, respectively.
For the men, it was all sophomores as junior Philip Aagaard did not compete. Following Chapman were Kevin Martes and Dave Posnick who finished in 105th and 115th place, respectively. Martes posted a time of 28:13.03 while Posnick came in at 28:32.37. Brett Guy (143rd) and Mike Moore (158th) rounded out the scorers.
The women's race was won by Samford, which tallied 50 points, followed by host Auburn's 78 points. Mississippi State (81 points), Alabama (172) and Georgia State (178) rounded out the top five. Tulane recorded 224 points for ninth place in the 21-team field.
Portland won the men's contest with 36 points while Auburn again took second place with 74 points. Rounding out the top five were LSU (124 points), Alabama (142) and Florida State (160). Tulane tallied 468 points for 16th of 22 teams.
"We used this race to experiment a little by going out very fast in the beginning of the race," said Mike Corn, Tulane's assistant coach who focuses on cross country. "Both the men and the women did a great job of testing themselves early and seeing how they would handle a very fast early pace. Now, going into conference, we know what our limits are and have a good idea of how we need to approach that race. I think that the team will be ready to run their best race of the year when we go to Chicago for the C-USA Championship at the end of the month."
Tulane has chosen not to run Saturday at the Nicholls State Invitational, instead the Wave will focus on the Oct. 30 Conference USA Championship.
