NEW ORLEANS, La. - While in the midst of fall practice, the 2005 Tulane University baseball team took time away from the diamond to continue its long partnership with St. Michaels Special School on Oct. 25 when they visited the school to hand out Halloween treats and participate in a pep rally held by the students.
In addition, the students at St. Michael's had a chance to showcase baseball skills of their own as members of the Green Wave squad tossed batting practice. The event was held in preparation for the annual FedEx/St. Michaels Day on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Turchin Stadium. The events include a Homerun Derby from 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. followed by the exhibition inter-squad game with the Tulane baseball players from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
"It's a special feeling to look into those kid's eyes and see how much fun they are having, and to know that we can help to bring them such joy," junior pitcher Matt Goebel said. "We are very proud to be partners with St. Michaels School. Each one of those kids is a source of inspiration.
"I am really excited about the upcoming game at Turchin Stadium. It is yet another opportunity for us to spend time with the kids and continue building relationships with them and their school that will last for years to come."
There will be prizes, raffles & concessions with all the proceeds benefiting St. Michaels Special School. Admission is free, but donations will be appreciated at the gate.
One of the Green Wave's most active teams in forms of community service, the visit at St. Michaels and upcoming game at Turchin Stadium are just the most recent outreach projects done by the boys in olive green and sky blue. Back on Aug. 28, the baseball team participated in the Outreach Tulane Paint Rally for New Orleans Public Schools where the squad helped prime walls in the school cafeteria, hallways and classrooms at nearby Eleanor McMain Magnet School.
During the 2003-04 academic year, the Green Wave continued their partnership with St. Michael's Special School, hosting the annual intrasquad game along with the students of the institution. Then, in December, the team went to St. Michael's where they were treated to a holiday play before sharing fun and fellowship with the students. In addition, while the team had an off day in between the end of the 2004 regular season and C-USA Tournament, they made a visit to The Briarwood School in Houston, Texas.
