LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Freshman Tiffany Brown won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles, and rookie Danielle Carrillo swept the one- and three-meter diving events, as the Tulane University swimming and diving team swept North Texas, Henderson State and host Arkansas-Little Rock Saturday afternoon at the UALR Donaghey Student Center.
The Green Wave won 14 of the 16 events on Saturday, defeating UALR 240-26, Henderson State 216-72 and North Texas, 206-92. With the triple-dual meet sweep, the Green Wave improved to 7-1 on the year, and have now defeated five straight opponents. Their lone loss of the year came back on Oct. 15 when Tulane dropped a 217-76 decision to No. 17 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla.
"We are fortunate in that we have a lot of quality depth in our events this year," head coach Daniella Irle said. "We did not swim in our best events today as several of the ladies swam in their second, third, or even fourth or fifth events. This is something we wanted to do through our recruiting as well as our daily training, and for us to win all three meets in such dominating fashion is encouraging.
"We want to develop diversity and versatility among all of our athletes, meaning they can play more than one position, and we have that. To have people move around and swim different events is what wins you conference championships, and today, we were very successful doing just that."
Brown, who posted times of 1:54.73 and 5:06.25 in the 200 and 500 free events, respectively, was one of three Green Wave student-athletes to post two wins in the sweep. Carrillo won the diving events with scores of 217.85 in the one-meter springboard and 227.40 in the three-meter, and redshirt-freshman Lauren Patterson took home the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes with times of 1:00.19 and 2:08.70, respectively.
Other individual winners for Tulane were sophomore Leslie Christian in the 1650 free (17:18.44), freshman Kate Naglick in the 200 fly (2:11.21), sophomores Linda McEachrane, Katherine McCoy and Taylor Emerson in the 50 free (24.64), 100 free (55.32) and 100 fly (59.89), respectively, and rookie Samantha Berdine in the 400 IM (4:36.67).
In addition, Brown joined forces with McEachrane, Emerson, and rookie Cara Davidoff to win the 200-yard medley relay with a mark of 1:50.41, and the quartet of McEachrane, senior Devlyn Quinn, Davidoff and McCoy combined to conclude the meet a win in the 400 free relay with 3:40.06 on the clock.
Berdine led Tulane in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.68 to finish third, sophomore Maureen Quinn paced the Green Wave in the 200 breast with a third-place finish of her own (2:30.56).
"We're pleased with our performances today," Irle said. "We had some very strong swims, and are very satisfied with our progression to this point."
The Green Wave returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 13, when Tulane host Arkansas-Little Rock and cross-town foe UNO at 10 a.m. at the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium. Admission to next weekend's double-dual meet is open to the public, and admission is free.
