Louisville 48, Tulane 47 - Final Box Score
Tulane held Louisville to a season-low 48 points, but only managed 47 themselves in a 48-47 loss to the Cardinals at Fogelman Arena on Friday night.
Tulane drops to 8-15 with the loss and is 1-9 in Conference USA play. Louisville won its fifth straight to improve to 15-8 overall and is now 7-3 in league action.
Louisville led by as many as 14, 41-27 with 13:28 left in the second half before the Wave came storming back. Delacey Joseph hit back-to-back three's to jump start a 12-0 run the sliced Tulane's deficit to just two, 41-39 at the 5:09 mark. But Louisville answered with five straight points, three coming at the free throw line to push its cushion back to seven with 3:26 left. Joseph hit another three to cut the Cardinal lead to four, but a lay-up from UL's Jazz Covington gave the visitors a 48-42 lead with 2:50 left. Each team squandered opportunites inside the final two minutes until a lay-up from Lakethia Hampton pulled Tulane to within four, 48-44, with one minute left. Kelly Nadeau added a three-pointer to trim the lead to one, but the Wave could not overcome the Cardinals and suffered the one-point set-back.
Joseph led Tulane with 15 points and four rebounds, while Hampton posted her second straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also had two assists and three blocked shots. Covington led Louisville with 23 points and 10 rebounds. The Wave did a good job of containing preseason All-Conference USA selection Sara Nord, holding her to just eight points and two assists while forcing her into six turnovers. She had entered the contest averaging 18.2 points and 6.8 assists per game.
The first half was much like the first, with Louisville building a lead only to see the Green Wave cut into it. The teams traded baskets early, and Tulane led 5-4, before the Cardinals made a run to lead 20-11 at the 8:10 mark. However, Tulane answered with a 10-2 burst to trim the lead to just one, 22-21 at the 3:55 mark, before Louisville took a 25-21 lead into the locker room.
Tulane held Louisville to just 31.7 percent shooting (19-of-60), but the Cardinals made up for their poor shooting with a 47-37 edge in rebounding and outscored the Green Wave 19-8 in second-chance points. The 48 points were the lowest scored by a Tulane opponent this season, and a season-low for the Cardinals.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave play host to Cincinnati at Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST.
