NEW ORLEANS, La. - I must say that this weekend was one of the most complete performances that I've been a part of on a baseball field. It was such a great time at the ballpark. I don't think the new guys on the team really understood what its like to play at Turchin until this weekend. The fans were awesome. I know I wouldn't want to be team who has to come play a road game against us in the type of environment I witnessed this weekend. It made us all realize how important hosting a regional actually is to our chances at Omaha.
I must say this has been a fun week. We had no school due to spring break, so all we had to concentrate on was baseball. We had a great week of practice in less than great weather, and we came out and took care of business against a solid Utah team. Utah really did have some good players, but, with the way our pitchers threw this weekend, I'm not sure if many teams would have faired well. This is definitely the type of momentum we wanted going into Tuesday night's battle with the Tigers from Baton Rouge.
We're about to head into the toughest part of our schedule, and I believe I can speak for the team when I say we're excited and ready. In the next couple weeks we'll be playing one with LSU, three with Pepperdine, two with Southern California, and three with Arizona State before heading to undefeated East Carolina to start conference play. It's the type of stretch that this Green Wave team can really start to show the type of team we have the potential to become.
With spring break over, though, we head back to school today. It's really important for us to manage our time correctly during the season because, before you know it, those midterms and finals start to sneak up on you. Baseball has its demands, but so does school. A lot of us players are here to play ball, but we're also hear to earn a high quality degree from one of the best universities in the South. Not many teachers care that you couldn't hand in your paper because you were busy picking up a weekend sweep on the field. So, especially at a place like Tulane, we have to be careful that we don't let our grades get in the way of our ability to play on the field when the postseason comes and the final grades are in.
At the same time, though, when its time to play ball, its time to play ball. And Tuesday night is time to play ball. Both us and LSU are coming off weekend sweeps, so this week's match-up should be an interesting one. It's always fun to play those guys because, although a lot of us know players on each other's teams, it's always a cold-blooded fight. Let's hope the Wave can produce the same outcome as last year's Zephyr field game, then get it done against Pepperdine at home this weekend.
Well, that's all I have for now. Don't forget - Zephyr Field on Tuesday and Pepperdine at Turchin this weekend. See you guys there. Let's pick up four quality wins!
Roll Wave,
Tommy
