BATON ROUGE, La. - Philip Aagaard and Rachel Bryan continued their excellent seasons on Saturday morning as both led the Tulane cross country teams at the LSU Invitational. Aagaard has led the Green Wave men in all three races this year, while Bryan has done the same for the Wave women.
The Tulane men finished fourth overall in the 10-team field, while the women were second of 12 teams. LSU won both the men's and women's races.
Running his first eight-kilometer race of the year, Aagaard posted a time of 27:17.69 to finish 18th overall in the 86-runner field. Sophomores Kevin Martes and Tyler Chapman were just behind Aagaard, finishing in 20th and 21st place, respectively. Mike Moore and Brett Guy, also sophomores, rounded out the scorers for the Green Wave, finishing back-to-back at 32nd and 33rd.
On the women's side, Rachel Bryan finished in second place on the six-kilometer course, recording a time of 22:12.93. Bryan had won her first two collegiate races. Freshman Aubrey Phillips also had another strong day, finishing in fifth place at 22:46.53 in the 93-runner field. Phillips has finished in the top five in all three of her races this year.
Junior Lisa Green notched a time of 24:38.65 to finish 22nd overall. Freshmen Helen Kenworthy and Savannah Moon rounded out the scoring for the Green Wave women.
"All these races are preparation for the conference championship," Tulane coach Heather Van Norman said. "There are always good and bad things in every race, we need to build on the good things and learn from the bad things. We are seeing where we are right now and we are definitely improving, and we will continue to get better."
LSU won the men's race with 29 points while UL-Lafayette was second with 54 points. Southeastern Louisiana had 84 points for third place while the Green Wave tallied 103 points. McNeese State rounded out the top five with 110 points.
On the women's side, LSU had 29 points to take the title. Tulane had 84 points for second place, narrowly edging UNO's 87 points. UL-Lafayette (125 points) and Southeastern Louisiana (155) rounded out the top five.
The top six Tulane women will be in action on Friday at the Notre Dame Invitational, while the men's team and the remaining women will compete Saturday at the UNO Invitational.
