New Orleans - Tulane University Head Basketball Coach Dave Dickerson announced today that sophomore Ryan Williams has left the team.
"Ryan has decided to leave our basketball team and will transfer from Tulane University at the end of the fall 2006 semester," Dickerson said. "We are going to miss Ryan, but we are dealing with a team sport where everyone needs to be 100 percent committed. He wanted to take a different direction with his career and we wish him well with his future endeavors."
A 6'1", 185-pound guard from Jonesboro, Ark., Williams started three of the first four games this season and averaged 4.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest. His last game came against Loyola (La.), and he registered 10 points, three rebounds and two assists. He matched his career-high with seven assists vs. cross-town rival New Orleans in the second game of the year.
"Ryan's year and half with us was very important to me and our basketball program. He was our starting point guard as a freshman and was an individual who handled last year's situation with Hurricane Katrina as well as anyone on our team," Dickerson said.
As a freshman, Williams started 23 of 29 games and averaged 4.7 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. In conference action, he improved his scoring average to 6.7 points per outing and dished out 3.4 assists per game.
His best single game effort came last season at UAB where has scored a career-best 17 points. Williams finished with a career-best seven assists against Savannah State, Marshall (2/4) and Loyola, and he grabbed a career-high six rebounds at Southern Miss.
