
Brown's Career Night Leads Tulane Past Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Tulane women's basketball team fended off Winthrop, 58-53, Friday at Winthrop Coliseum. Junior forward Alendra Brown recorded her first career double-double with a career-high tying 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Senior guard Jami Montagnino led the Green Wave (9-2) with 15 points to go with six rebounds.
Sophomore guard Ashley Langford chipped in 11 points and three assists. Senior guard D'Aundra Henry dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds.
Once again, Tulane closed out the game with a run, using a 7-0 run from the 6:27 mark to stretch its lead to nine before back-to-back buckets by the Lady Eagles in the last 17 seconds provided the final margin.
The Green Wave have won four in a row and six of seven to remain a perfect 9-0 versus unranked teams this season.
Tulane struggled from the field at times, shooting 36.1 percent (22-of-61), but forced 18 turnovers and recorded 11 steals while holding Winthrop to just one field goal over a stretch of 12:35 until the final 17 seconds.
The two teams came out with good defense, as the Wave held Winthrop to four of the first 11 shots from the field. But Tulane could only connect on two of its first 13, as the Eagles took a 10-6 lead with 12:00 to go in the first.
A jumper by junior forward Dominique Philpots brought Tulane within one at 16-15, and a three from junior guard Nikki Luckhurst gave the Green Wave their first lead of the game at 20-19. Winthrop's Jessica Fansler scored eight-straight points for the Eagles, but Luckhurst's second thee-pointer of the game tied the score at 28-28 with 1:59 to go in the first. Each team picked up a free-throw before the half.
Tulane rebounded to shoot 40.0 percent (10-of-25) from the field in the first half, led by Luckhurst with six points, Langford and Montagnino each had five points at intermission. Brown grabbed six boards in the first stanza. Fansler paced all scorers with 12 in the first half, while Franchesa Davenport had eight rebounds.
The Green Wave opened the second half with a 7-2 run, causing three turnovers and capped by an `and-one' from Brown.
After a three by Montagnino, the Eagles used a 6-0 run to pull within 41-37 with 11:56 to go. Tulane held Winthrop without a field goal for 6:05, but the Eagles scored from the free throw line, whittling the lead to 47-45.
But Tulane answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a three from Montagnino and stretched the lead to nine before Winthrop added two field goals in the final 17 seconds.
Winthrop (3-10) was led by Fansler with 16 points while Tiffany Rodd added 13.
Tulane returns to Fogelman Arena for the Tulane DoubleTree Classic on December 29-30. The first game (5 p.m.) features Ole Miss and Texas Arlington, followed by the Green Wave and Fordham.
Tulane will honor all-time leading scorer (2,249) and three-time All-American Grace Daley by retiring her jersey at halftime of the game against Fordham.
