NEW ORLEANS - Sophomore guard Ashley Langford tied her own school record for assists with 14 as Tulane avenged an earlier loss at UTEP by dismantling the Miners, 81-56. The Green Wave shot 65.4 percent from the field, while holding UTEP to 28 percent.
Langford recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points. Senior guard Jami Montagnino led all scorers with 19 points and senior guard D'Aundra Henry added nine points with four assists.
The Green Wave (15-4, 4-2 Conference USA) handed out 30 total assists on the day -- the third-most in school history - on their 34 field goals made. Tulane was one off the school record for assists in a game (31, set twice).
Tulane opened the second half with a 17-6 run on the Miners (15-3, 4-2 C-USA) turning the game into a rout by connecting at a 79.2 clip from the field.
Montagnino shot seven-of-nine and added seven rebounds. Junior forward Dominique Philpots shot a perfect five-for-five from the field for 10 points while adding three rebounds and a block in 14 minutes. Jennifer Sands and Alendra Brown each chipped in eight points from the Tulane frontcourt.
The Tulane defense held UTEP without a double-digit scorer as Whitney Thornton led the Miners with nine.
The Green Wave staked an early 11-7 lead after an `and-one' opportunity by Henry. UTEP trimmed the margin for 21-18, but Henry answered with a three from the wing for a 27-18 lead with 6:05 left in the first.
Langford converted a lay-up off a steal and pass from Henry, getting fouled and hitting the free throw for a 36-23 lead. Montagnino added an `and-one' with two seconds left as the Wave took a 39-28 lead into the break.
Montagnino led all scorers with 12 points at intermission, while Langford racked up six assists. Henry added seven points and three assists in the first frame.
Montagnino opened the second half with a three-pointer and a long jumper with her foot on the line as Tulane posted a 7-2 run, prompting a timeout from UTEP. The Wave never looked back, connecting on 19-of-24 shots in the second half and leading by as many as 31.
The Green Wave avenged a 80-76 loss against UTEP in El Paso on January 2, the C-USA opener for both teams. The Wave played that game without Sands.
Langford's previous career-best 14 assists came against SMU on February 26, 2006. It's her eighth career game with double-digit assists and of the top 14 single-game assist marks in school history, she owns eight of them.
