NEW ORLEANS-The Tulane baseball team held their annual St. Michael's Special School softball game on October 11, 2008. Celebrating its tenth year as partner to Tulane Baseball, member s of St. Michael's got the opportunity to take to the field at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium for a nine-inning scrimmage.
Members of the Green Wave baseball team were on hand to assist each St. Michael's student with each aspect of the game, including fielding and hitting. St. Michael's, a New Orleans-based institute specializing in the development of special needs children and young adults, brought out 40 students to take part in the softball event, one of Tulane-St. Michael's gatherings in which the Green Wave baseball club take part.
"It's something we're really proud to be a part of," Tulane head coach Rick Jones said. "It's a win-win for both their kids as well as our kids. I think our kids get absolutely as much, if not more, out of that than theirs do."
The event is sponsored by FedEx and a post-game ceremony takes place in which students at St. Michael's are presented with medals for the efforts on the field. Tulane hosted close to 300 people, who came out to cheer on the students.
The Green Wave baseball team, already having visited St. Michael's earlier in the fall, will make a return visit around the holidays and bring students out to their home field again in the spring.
