New Orleans- The Tulane baseball club couldn't overcome a 12-run, 12-hit showing from Wright State in the Friday night weekend opener, as the Green Wave lost to the Raiders 12-6.
"We've got to give a lot of credit to Wright State," head coach Rick Jones said. "They really played well. They out-hit us and played better defense than we did. They came out and beat us in every phase of the game."
Wright State (1-4) jumped on the board first when leadoff hitter R.J. Gundorff tripled to left field to open the contest. He later scored on a Quentin Cates (1-3, 2 RBI, HR) groundout. Cleanup hitter Casey McGrew stepped in and picked up his first of four hits on the night, as he laced a double. Jeff Mercer doubled in McGrew and Wright State jumped ahead 2-0 going into the Green Wave half of the first inning.
Tulane led off their half of the inning when Nick Boullosa (3-5, HR) laid down a bunt single. Boullosa stole second with two-hitter Josh Prince in the box and advanced to third on a Prince groundout to the right side. Sam Honeck knocked in Boullosa on a sac fly and going into the second inning, Tulane trailed 2-1.
But the Green Wave couldn't overcome the Raider offense in the middle innings as Wright State posted a five-run third inning. Catcher Gerald Ogrinc led off the Raider third with a single and went station to station, giving Kyle Mossberger an RBI. Mercer homered, picking up three RBI of his own, increasing the Raider lead 7-1.
The Green Wave answered back with two runs when Prince drew a one out walk and Seth Henry doubled to left field to advance him to third. Honeck doubled down the right field line to score Prince and Henry, closing the gap to 7-3.
The Raiders picked up insurance runs in the fifth and six innings when McGrew homered in the Raider fifth, picking up two RBI, followed by Cate's sixth inning solo shot.
Tulane, looking to close in on the deficit in the bottom of the ninth, saw a Boullosa single through the left side with one out. Prince followed with a triple down the right field line to plate Boullosa. Henry hit a bullet right at centerfielder Ryan Ashe but picked up the RBI when Prince tagged up on the play, giving the ball game its final score of 12-6 in favor of the Raiders.
Tulane will take the field for games two and three in the series tomorrow. The double header begins at 12PM.
