New Orleans- The Green Wave club rolled out another victory Sunday afternoon with a 6-4 win over the University of Southern California to take the series two games to one. Tulane put up three runs in the third, picked up single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before Nick Pepitone came in and shut the door on the Trojans, picking up his second save of the season, and securing Josh Zeid's third victory of the year.
The Green Wave offense picked up where they left off on Saturday when Nick Boullosa led off the third inning with a base on balls and stole second. Boullosa advanced to third on a Seth Henry fly ball to right field and with one out, designated hitter Evan Mistich followed with another walk off of Trojan starter Danny Coulombe, putting runners at the corners for first baseman Sam Honeck. Honeck picked up two RBI when he drilled a double to left center, plating both Boullosa and Mistich. Honeck would later score on a Steve Moritz single, the first of Moritz's four-hit day, and giving Tulane a 3-0 advantage headed into the fourth.
USC's Keith Castillo picked up a run with one swing in his two-out plate appearance in the fourth and came within one when Joe De Pinto notched a run in the top of the fifth. Tulane answered back in their half of the fifth when Jeremy Schaffer singled to left field to bring up Moritz. Moritz singled through the left side and with one out, the Wave right fielder Drew Allain stepped in. Allain, who was 1-2 with two walks, picked up an RBI when he singled in Schaffer and advanced to second on the throw home and Tulane's lead was extended 4-2 headed into the sixth.
Seth Henry, who went 2-4 with two RBI picked up his fourth home run of the year when he led off the Tulane sixth with a solo shot to right field, giving the Green Wave a boost and a three-run cushion, 5-2.
The Trojans tried to stage a comeback in the seventh when they put up two runs after scoring Hector Rabago and Grant Green, who had led off the inning, but Pepitone came in in relief and quickly retired the side. Pepitone went on to throw three innings, striking out six of the 10 batters he faced.
Tulane went on to pick up and insurance run in the seventh when Josh Prince found his way on via a base on balls and was knocked in by Henry's second hit of the afternoon, giving the Wave the 6-4 victory and the series win over USC.
Tulane will take Greer Field at Turchin Stadium again Tuesday when they face McNeese State before heading out to California for the club's first road series this year against UC Irvine next weekend. Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 6PM.
