NEW ORLEANS- The Green Wave enjoyed a 12-11 extra-inning victory over Conference USA foe Memphis Sunday, as Drew Allain's walk-off bomb in the bottom of the twelfth secured the win and the series for Tulane, but the club is ready to get back to business as they travel to Baton Rouge to take on in-state rival Louisiana State Wednesday at 6:30PM at Alex Box Stadium.
Wednesday's contest will mark the 295th time the two schools have met on the baseball diamond, with Tulane having taken the 8-7 victory in the last meeting earlier in the season. Southpaw Aaron Loup picked up the win after throwing 6.2 innings while striking out four. Reliever Nick Pepitone picked up the save in the victory, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Offensively, the club received support from leadoff man Josh Prince, who picked up three hits, in addition to Drew Allain's 2-4, two RBI performance. Senior first baseman, Sam Honeck went 2-4 in the showing against the Tigers, logging a double and a home run while also tallying four RBI.
More recently, Prince continues to stay hot for Tulane (26-18, 7-8 C-USA), extending his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games. The junior shortstop currently has a team-high .372 average, while upping his stolen base count to 38 over the weekend, putting him in fourth place in the Tulane record books for most stolen bases in a single season. Utility man Steve Moritz also put up impressive numbers over the weekend, with a strong finish in Sunday's contest against Memphis. The senior from Tomball, Texas went 4-6 in the finale, picking up his seventh double of the year while knocking in two runs. Jeremy Schaffer remains a steady source of offense for Tulane, with the rookie hitting a pair of home runs in last week's games while also adding six RBI to bring his season total to 43.
The Green Wave hope to continue to barrel up on the ball behind the pitching efforts of Loup on Tuesday against the Tigers at Alex Box Stadium. Loup enters the game with a 5.44 ERA, coming off a gem of a game in which the lefty picked up his second victory of the year over cross-town rival UNO on Wednesday. Loup tossed 7.0 innings, striking out a career-high eight batters in the contest, while holding the Privateers to just three hits. Loup stayed strong throughout, facing just 22 UNO hitters in his 86-pitch outing.
The Tigers (33-12) are coming off a winning weekend, recording a three-game Southeastern Conference sweep of Auburn last weekend. Head coach Paul Mainieri will send sophomore right-hander Ben Alsup (0-0, 4.00 ERA) to the mound, where he will be making his second career collegiate start. Offensively, the Tigers are paced by DJ LeMahieu, who is enjoying a .366 average on the strength of eight doubles, three triples, three home runs and 23 RBI. Sean Ochinko (.344, 8 2B, 7 HR, 40 RBI) and Tyler Hanover (.333, 6 2B, 4 HR, 40 RBI) have also contributed towards the club's success.
The matchup will be broadcast on WRBH 88.3FM, with first pitch slated for 6:30PM.
