NEW ORLEANS- Tulane University baseball standouts Conrad Flynn and Sam Honeck were named first team All-Louisiana while Josh Prince was named to the second team, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association announced Sunday.
Flynn was a consistent weekend starter for Tulane, having gotten the nod in 14 games. He sported a staff-best 3.93 ERA over a team-high 87.0 innings of service during his sophomore campaign. The native of Midland, Texas, boasts more wins than walks issued on the season, with eight victories to his seven bases on balls. He has stuck out 58 batsmen on the year, including 23 struck out looking. He has tossed three complete games and posted a career-high eight strikes outs against ECU in 7.1 innings pitched.
The club's three-hitter for the majority of the season, Honeck led the team in home runs and RBI with 16 and 70, respectively, as well as in slugging percentage with .630. His RBI count has also put him in the top 25 nationally. Named to the First Team All-Conference USA, Honeck was a reliable first baseman with a .982 fielding percentage in 558 chances. An 11th round MLB draft choice by the New York Mets, Honeck reported to Brooklyn, where he is currently playing first base for the Cyclones, the Mets' single-A affiliate.
Second-teamer Prince had a breakout junior season with the club's shortstop batting a team-high .353 on the strength of 15 doubles, a team-high four triples and six home runs. The Sulphur, La., native has also tallied 31 RBI with a .541 slugging percentage. A LSWA Player of the Week, Prince stole 48 bases on the year, putting him in a tie as the national stolen bases leader.
He received Second Team All-Conference USA honors and has been a steady defender, known for his big league plays in the hole, including bare-handed grabs to gun down batters. He was also been named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, an award given to the nation's top shortstop. Prince was selected in the third round of the MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers and reported to Helena, Mont., home of the Helena Brewers. Their season opens Tuesday against Missoula.
