NEW ORLEANS - A new era of Tulane athletics begins Saturday when the Green Wave bowling team takes to the lanes for the first time when they host Southern University-Baton Rouge in a dual match at the world famous Rock `N' Bowl.
Festivities will begin at 9:30 a.m. and admission is free. A special ceremony which includes speeches by Tulane Director of Athletics Rick Dickson and head bowling coach Hayley Beavis. The bowlers will take to the lanes around 10 a.m. The event will consist of two NCAA matches. NCAA points will be awarded for the combined total pins of the three regular team games and then the combined total pins for the eight baker games as required by NCAA.
"We are really excited to start this season," Beavis said. "These last few months have kind of flown by. The girls have been working extremely hard and are ready for this weekend and the rest of the season."
In the Baker format, starting members of the competing teams shall successively and, in regular order, bowl one frame on one lane. Once five frames are completed, the team members shall remain on the same lane and complete the starting member order again, with frames six through 10 being completed. This pattern of play will continue until all 10 frames of a game are completed. No changes shall be made in the order of players after the start of a game, except for substitutes, although once you have been pulled from the game you are not allowed to return until the next game.
In the five-person team game, starting members of the competing teams shall successively and, in regular order, bowl one frame on one lane. Once completed, the team members shall move to the alternate lane of the competition pair. This pattern of play continues until all 10 frames of a game are complete. The same substitution rules as Baker applies here.
Tulane becomes the 34th Division I school to sponsor women's bowling, including in-state schools Louisiana Tech, Southern and Grambling State. Other notable schools include Nebraska, Vanderbilt and Arkansas State.
Tulane fields a roster of eight bowlers that includes senior Jessica Cwik, juniors Sarah Knapp, Regina Popova, Hillary Sullivan and Heather Fraser, sophomore Caryn Wong, and freshmen Victoria Wiseman and Kelsie Kelly.
"This is new for everyone," Beavis added. "It's new for Rock `N' Bowl, new for Tulane and new for the girls. We are going to have some fun and enjoy the experience. Hopefully it will be something that we grow upon."
