NEW ORLEANS - In a historical morning at the famous Rock `N' Bowl the Tulane bowling team fell to Southern-Baton Rouge in both the five-player team competition and the baker format on Saturday in the first match in the school's history.
Tulane junior Sarah Knapp recorded the morning's top individual score in the five-person competition with a total of 592 pins and a 197.3 average. She bowled a 205 in game one, 197 in game two and a 190 in game three
Southern earned the victory in the five-person team competition, 2734 to 2364. The total score is the combined number of pins knocked down by the five players on each team over the three games.
"It's not easy coming out for the first time not knowing what to expect," Tulane head coach Hayley Beavis said. "I'm sure nerves played a little in part of the first game, but as the games went on the girls got better and better. It is a good sign."
The Jaguars also outdueled the Green Wave, 903-849, in the shorted baker format to receive the win. The teams only rolled five of the eight scheduled games in the format due to time constraints. The baker format was also decided by the cumulative number of pins knocked down.
In the Baker format, starting members of the competing teams shall successively and, in regular order, bowl one frame on one lane. Once five frames are completed, the team members shall remain on the same lane and complete the starting member order again, with frames six through 10 being completed. This pattern of play will continue until all 10 frames of a game are completed.
Tulane jumped out to an early lead in the baker format, out-bowling Southern, 172-170, in game one, but the Jaguars came back to roll a 216 in the second game to take a 40 pin lead. The teams tied the third game before Tulane outscored Southern, 193-144, cut the deficit to 11 pins, but the Jaguars rebounded with a 194-151 win in the fifth and final game.
"I was extremely impressed with how we performed in the baker format," Beavis added. "We were really competitive and we would have been able to keep bowling I think we would have had a change of beating them. We were really on par and it showed how well the team is working together."
Southern's top bowler in the five-person competition, Kate McConnell, rolled a 193.3 average with a total of 580 pins, including a match-high 214 in game three.
The Green Wave's Jessica Cwik knocked down a total of 551 pins in the team competition, including a 191 in the third game.
Tulane improved its total score in each game, totaling a 724 in game one, an 807 in game two and an 833 in game three.
Southern rolled a 906 in game one, 895 in game two and a 933 in the third game.
Tulane returns to the lanes on Oct. 22-23 at the Fall Baker Invitational hosted by Kutztown University in Reading, Pa.
