NEW ORLEANS - Newcomer Josh Davis' 21 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Ricky Tarrant's 19 points led the Tulane men's basketball team to a 70-68 victory over cross-campus foe Loyola on Sunday night in Fogelman Arena in the lone exhibition game of the season.
The game was decided in the final minutes after Loyola chipped away at Tulane's double digit lead and got within one, 69-68, with 0:29 remaining on a Chris Joseph lay-up. The Green Wave held a 12 point lead, the largest of the game, 64-52, with 8:41 left when senior transfer Dan Monckton knocked down his only basket of the game, a 3-pointer.
After Loyola's 16-5 run capped by the Joseph lay-up, Tulane's Jordan Callahan missed a free throw and Monckton was called for a lane violation, giving possession to the Wolfpack with 0:20 remaining, but Green Wave senior Trent Rogers forced a turnover by Cameron Gates 15 seconds later that would prove to be the game winning play. Rogers knocked down a free throw to boost the lead to 70-68 before Loyola's Joseph missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw with 0:01 left. Kendall Timmons secured the rebound and the victory for Tulane.
"It was a very good game for us," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "It put us in game situations that are hard to simulate in practice. It's hard to simulate the crowd and fatigue and different line-ups due to injury. It was a great game for us and Loyola played well and we will benefit and grow from this."
Tulane shot 44.6 percent from the floor in the game, including 51.6 percent in the opening half. Loyola hit 46.3 percent from the floor and connected on 50.0 in the second half. The Green Wave dished out nine assists, had 12 turnovers and forced 18 Wolfpack turnovers.
Timmons finished the game with 13 points and seven rebounds in 35 minutes off the bench, while Callahan added eight points in 25 minutes. Davis' double double came in 37 minutes in a starting role. Tarrant also started and scored his 19 in 31 minutes.
12 of the 14 active roster members for the Green Wave played in the game and eight scored.
"I would have liked to have gotten a few more minutes from some of the young guys," Conroy added. "It was just very difficult the way the flow of the game was. The ones that got out there got some valuable experience and will grow from it."
Robert Lovaglio led Loyola with 19 points and six rebounds, while Joseph finished with 12 points and Cates added 10 points.
Tulane officially opens the season Friday when they begin a three-game home stand when Alabama A&M visits Fogelman Arena as part of a double header with the Green Wave women's team. The women play Loyola at 6 p.m. CT, while the men will get underway approximately 8 p.m. CT.
