NEW ORLEANS - The nucleus of both the men's and women's squads will return for the 2011 cross country campaign and head coach Eric Peterson has put together a schedule that will test them on a local, regional and national level in his third season at the helm. The Green Wave will compete in five pre-championship meets before moving into the championship portion of the schedule at the end of October.
The pre-championship slate will have a familiar feel with three of the five meets being featured on the 2010 schedule. The season opener will come at the Georgia Invitational (Sept. 3) for the second straight year, with the women's squad grabbing a third place showing and the men bringing home sixth place in the ten-team event in 2010.
After two weeks of training, the Justin F. Cooper Memorial will await the Olive and Blue in Houston. The meet will be hosted by Conference USA foe Rice and take place on Friday, September 16. The next weekend will watch as the Green Wave head up to Baton Rouge, La. for the LSU Invitational, where senior Julia Whitrock will look to defend the individual crown that she won last season. The women's squad took third place at the meet in 2010, while the men came in with a seventh place showing.
As the calendar turns to October, Tulane will have just two tune-up meets before the Conference USA Championships at the end of the month. The Cowboy Stampede will take place on October 1 in Lake Charles, La. as McNeese State will play host to the event, before the two squads head to the Crimson Classic. The event will close out their pre-championships slate on October 15 and is hosted by the University of Alabama at the Harry Pritchard Running Course.
The Conference USA Championships will be hosted by Rice on October 30, with Tulane looking to improve on their 2010 finishes. The women's squad will look to move up from their ninth place showing and the men will try to improve from their eighth place finish a year ago. On November 12, the Green Wave will head to Waco, Texas for the NCAA South Central Regional and the NCAA Championships are slated for November 21 in Terre Haute, Ind.
In 2010, the Green Wave saw improvement from every runner on the team and each competitor set a new personal best during the campaign. Both squads return the majority of their rosters, with the women's team losing just three runners and the men's team bringing back everyone.
