NEW ORLEANS - Both teams walked away from the Georgia Invitational with mixed feelings, it was great to get back out onto the course and the results were good, but a host of runners were fighting back after suffering injuries during last spring's track and field campaign. Paige Callahan opened her Tulane career by leading the women's squad, while Max Miller picked up where he left off last fall by leading the men's squad.
The two teams will head to Houston for a rare Friday evening meet at the John F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational. The men's squad will send eight student-athletes and the women's team will see ten individuals compete on the 4K (women's) and 5K (men's) courses.
Of the eight men's competitors that will take to the course for the Olive and Blue, five of them saw their first action of the season last week. Miller was the leader for the team, finishing the 8K course with a time of 27:52.18 and freshman GeoffrEy Zelek was the second Green Wave to cross the finish line, running 28:08.65. Brian Lozes will look to return to his form from last Fall, after battling injury most of the Spring, and had a solid run last weekend at Georgia. Michael Villasin will see his first action for the Green Wave - enrolling in Graduate School at Tulane this season - while Cody Gibbons, Mark Manion, Mike Mainguy and Jordan Vance will all compete, too.
Callahan finished 22nd overall last weekend in her collegiate debut at the Georgia Invitational, running 19:01.31, and will look to lead an experience group again this weekend in Houston. She will be the lone rookie running for the Green Wave this weekend, while seniors Cassie Campbell, Jessica Dallager and Julia Whitrock will look to take that top spot. Emmi Aguillard and Johanna Gretschel finished second and third, respectively, for the Olive and Blue last weekend, with Aguillard just 12-seconds behind Callahan. Tavie Abell, Aimee Arceneaux and Callie Turlington will all run in their first race of the season on Friday.
