MONTGOMERY, Ala. - History was made over the weekend as the Tulane bowling team, in its fourth year of existence, claimed the program's first team title by taking the Alabama State Hornet Classic at the Brunswick Lanes.
The Green Wave (24-15) defeated UAB in the opening match on Sunday in the best-of-seven Baker play bracket and then upended 18th-ranked and third-seeded Alabama State to earn the team title. Tulane entered bracket play as the No. 2 seed behind UAB. The seeding was determined by the results of Friday and Saturday's bowling.
"I can't believe this day has finally come," Tulane head coach Hayley Veitch said. "I am so proud of all the ladies. They have worked very hard to get to this point and it has finally paid off."
Tulane sat in first-place after Friday's Baker play. The Green Wave went 4-1 and dropped 4741 pins on the opening day and then posted a 3-2 mark in Saturday's team play with 4589 total pins.
Individually, junior Hannah Ryan earned all-tournament honors by placing second overall. She rolled an average of 210.8, including games of 223, 239 and 236. Freshman Michelle Ng finished 24th with an average of 174.6.
"We will need to take this momentum into next weekend when we compete at Sam Houston State," Veitch added.
Tulane will get right back to work this coming weekend when they visit Huntsville, Texas, for the Sam Houston State Track Kat Clash that begins on Friday, Nov. 21 and concludes on Sunday, Nov 23.
