Men's Basketball Falls to No. 17 St. John's
Dec 28, 2014 | Men's Basketball
BROOKLYN - Poor shooting and turnovers plagued the Tulane men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in an, 82-57, loss to 17th-ranked St. john's in the opening game of the BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival in the Barclays Center.
The Green Wave (9-3), who closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule with Sunday's game, connected on just 22-of-58 field goals (37.9 percent), hit six-of-25 three-pointers and committed 17 turnovers against the Red Storm (11-1). St. John's, who won for the seventh straight outing, controlled the game almost throughout, shot 50.8 percent (31-61) from the floor and collected 14 steals.
"Credit St. John's," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "They came out and played with a lot of energy and intensity. Their toughness on the defensive end really got them going on the offensive end and gave them a lot of confidence. Obviously, our execution on the offensive end was not what is needed to be as far as taking care of the basketball and taking the right shots."
The game had six lead changes in the first five-plus minutes and Tulane held a 9-6 lead after a jumper by sophomore guard Jonathan Stark with 16:13 left in the opening half, but St. John's rattled off an 8-0 run over the next three minutes that gave them the lead for good.
The Red Storm built a double digit lead, 26-16, with 8:44 left in the half and the Green Wave was not able to get any closer. St. John's led, 47-22, at the break and had a 27-point advantage, the largest of the game, with 2:41 left in the contest.
Stark led Tulane with 15 points, while junior guard Louis Dabney added 12 points. Freshman center Dylan Osetkowski chipped in with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench. Senior guard Jay Hook also scored eight points to go with five rebounds.
Senior forward Sir'Dominic Pointer led St. John's with 24 points, while senior guard D'Angelo Harrison added 21. The Red Storm scored 20 of their points off the Tulane turnovers and posted 46 points in the paint.
Tulane will open its inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference on Wednesday when they visit fellow conference newcomer East Carolina for an 11 a.m. CT tip in Greenville. The Green Wave's next game in Devlin Fieldhouse will be the American Athletic Conference home-opener against Temple on Jan. 7.
Season ticket prices for Tulane's inaugural season in The American are $300 for premium chairback seating, $200 for bleacher seating, and $400 for the family zone (2 adult/2 youth for both men's and women's basketball seasons). In addition, men's basketball season ticket holders will have the exclusive opportunity to purchase half-priced women's season tickets.
