CINCINNATI, Ohio - On a Sunday afternoon inside Fifth Third Arena, the Tulane women's basketball team debuted in the American Athletic Conference with a 60-50 road win at Cincinnati (3-9, 0-1). As a result, the Green Wave moved to 10-2 on the year.
"I thought we had great energy. We were a little rusty in our defensive rotations but overall a good gut check after the break," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "I think going on the road right after break is a challenge and I'm really glad we were able to respond."
The Green Wave utilized a full team effort in the first half as eight different players got on the scoresheet. Tulane got off to a 6-0 start as Cincinnati began 0-for-9 from the field.
Up 14-8 at the 10:25 mark, Cincinnati created its biggest offensive surge of the half via a 9-2 run to grab their first and only lead of the contest at 17-16. However, the Wave quickly countered with a 16-3 run to end the first half with a 32-20 lead.
The Green Wave's defense forced Cincinnati to cough the ball up nine times, in which they converted into 11 points. Tulane also enjoyed a favorable advantage in the paint, outscoring Cincinnati 18-6 in the half.
The second half started with an offensive flurry from Cincinnati, as Bianca Quisenberry and Jasmine Whitfield powered a 10-2 Bearcats run, scoring all of the squad's 10 points on a combined 4-for-4 start from the field.
Pulling within one at 34-33 in the first five minutes, Tulane produced a 9-0 run to extend the lead back to 10. Then, Leslie Vorpahl took over the game, recording nine of the team's final 17 points, including her career tying fourth three-pointer of the contest.
Vorpahl finished with a team high 18 points on a 7-for-12 day from the field and 4-for-7 effort from three-point range. The sophomore guard also tallied three assists and two steals.
Meanwhile, Tiffany Dale recorded her first double-double of the season with a 10-point, 14-rebound performance. The senior forward collected nine of her season high 14 boards in the first half and finished with 10 offensive rebounds. Dale also tallied a team high four assists.
Furthermore, Kolby Morgan registered her 10th double digit scoring game of the year with 10 points today. The freshman shot 5-for-13 from the floor to go along with her three boards, two assists and two steals.
"Tiffany was tremendous. You can look at her 10 offensive boards. Her shots were right there. I like to see her confident. She's so athletic and can guard a variety of players. Our posts did a great job of taking their leading scorer out of the game," Stockton added.
Tulane held Cincinnati to a season low 50 points as the Bearcats shot 36.5 percent from the field. Meanwhile, the Wave shot 36.6 percent from the floor and outrebounded Cincinnati 46-34, resulting in an 18-2 edge in second chance points.
Up next, the Olive and Blue return home to host Houston on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be the first of seven Tulane conference games featured on the American Digital Network.
