NEW ORLEANS - On Tuesday night inside Devlin Fieldhouse, the Tulane women's basketball squad (15-3, 6-1) recorded a decisive 73-34 win over Tulsa (8-10, 3-4), tying the program's fourth largest margin of victory (39 points) in conference play. Kolby Morgan led with 17 points as Danielle Blagg and Leslie Vorpahl tallied 16 points each for the second consecutive game.
The Green Wave flexed both its offensive and defensive muscles in tonight's game. The victory not only was the squad's fourth 70+ point showing in the last six games, but also marked their opponent's lowest points total since Southern scored 31 points against Tulane on March 17, 2011.
In fact Tulsa's 34 points was a program low for the Golden Hurricane in conference play and just two points above their all-time low of 32. Tulsa became the sixth Tulane opponent to suffer a season low against the Green Wave's top-20 nationally ranked defense.
Tulane started the game with its best first half of the season, shooting 61.5 percent from the field, connecting on 11 of its first 14 shots. Vorpahl, Blagg and Morgan combined for 33 of the team's 39 first half points, shooting a combined 13-for-18 from the field.
"I thought we did a nice job and set the tempo for our defense early," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "We were able to score and set up that press. It made them a little more timid on offense when we trapped them. When you look at their field goal percentage, a lot of that was because they were guarded. I think our players did a tremendous job of not giving them easy shots."
Blagg was on fire from the perimeter, converting her first four shots from three-point range to notch 14 points at the half. The senior ultimately finished 6-of-10 from the field with three assists and three steals. In addition, with her four treys tonight, Blagg is now eight for her last 12 from three point range.
Meanwhile, Vorpahl also had double digits at the midway point with 10 points. The sophomore sunk her first six shot attempts on the night, including two three's, finishing 6-for-7 from the floor with three steals as well.
Next, Morgan started the second half by scoring eight of Tulane's first 15 points before concluding her night with her 13th double-figure scoring performance on the season. The freshman shot 7-of-10 from the field and grabbed five rebounds.
Tulane also forced Tulsa to commit a season high of 23 turnovers, in which 15 came in the first half. Tulsa, who had entered tonight's game ranked 46th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (35.3), was held to just 1-of-20 tonight.
Up next, the Green Wave will head to Tampa, where they'll try to avenge their lone conference loss of the season when they clash with the University of South Florida (14-4, 5-1) on Jan. 25. The Sunday showdown will air live on CBS Sports Network at 3 p.m. CT.
"I feel good that we're going into South Florida off of a good game where we got a lot of confidence," Stockton added. "We felt like last time (vs USF) we didn't take great shots. We felt like we wanted that opportunity back as soon the game was over. I think we're looking forward to seeing what we can do against them."
