Despite Dreary Weather, Tulane Baseball Begins Practice
Jan 23, 2015 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS - The weather at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium on Friday wasn't ideal, but it did not get in the way of Tulane's baseball program opening practice in preparation for the 2015 season, which is only three weeks away.
The entire Green Wave squad held their first official meeting of the spring with first-year head coach David Pierce and his staff before heading to the field for drills. The Green Wave hitters took batting practice in the Theresa Sofio Hitting Facility - also known as The Hack Shack - while the entire team also worked on defense.
Despite the chilly temperatures and gray skies, the Green Wave did manage to get in 6.0 quality innings during an intrasquad following the practice-portion of their schedule.
"It was a good first day," stated Pierce. "We had a good, full day. We will into tomorrow with a new set of pitchers. Everything went as planned today. The pitchers threw strikes, and we had a good intrasquad."
Tulane has three weeks in order to prepare for their first game of the season on Feb. 13. The Green Wave will travel will Malibu, California, for a series against Pepperdine that weekend.
The weekend prior to that, though, will see an influx of Tulane legends, as the Green Wave baseball program will hold their annual Alumni Weekend on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. There will be two Alumni Games that Saturday, with one pitting players prior to the 2000 season against one another at 10:30am CT. At 1:00pm, the current roster of players will take on a team comprised of players who graduated or exhausted their eligibility between the years of 2001 and 2014.
Tulane returns 24 players from a season ago, including regular position starters Garrett Deschamp, Hunter Hope, Stephen Alemais, Jake Rogers, Jake Willsey, Richard Carthon and Lex Kaplan. Additionally, the Green Wave will have the likes of Corey Merrill and Alex Massey back on the mound, as both started at least six contests last season. Additionally, the Green Wave have quality arms in Ian Gibaut and Jordan Gross returning, as well as Patrick Duester and Eric Steel who both transferred into the program over the summer.
Tulane plays home series against non-conference opponents San Francisco, Creighton, Gonzaga and Xavier before opening their first season in The American Athletic Conference against UConn on March 27. The Green Wave will also host UCF, Houston and USF in home conference series.
The Green Wave will host Southeastern Louisiana, New Orleans, Nicholls State, Southern Miss and LSU during midweek contests throughout the season.
