NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane head men's basketball coach Ed Conroy has announced the signing of Maxwell Starwood and Justin Moore to a National Letters of Intent Wednesday afternoon. Starwood and Moore will join the Green Wave in the fall of 2016.
"I love the competitiveness, skill and athleticism of the class we are putting together," Conroy said. "We are successfully adding the right pieces to complement and enhance our last two classes. This group will have an immediate impact and when you put them with our current sophomore class of Cameron Reynolds and Dylan Osetkowski and the freshmen class we currently have, I feel we put ourselves in position with successive recruiting to compete not only with the best in the American Athletic Conference, but also the best teams in the country. I look forward, as I know our fans do, to seeing this group grow and develop over the coming years."
Starwood adds to the ever-growing number of Louisiana natives on the Tulane roster, hailing from Baton Rouge. The 6-8, 220lb, power forward graduated from University Lab in 2015 and is currently doing a post-grad year at Reno International Prep. Starwood helped his University Lab team win back-to-back Class 3A state championships, while notching a 36-3 record in his final two seasons. A strong defender, Starwood led his team in blocks and drawn charges as a junior and senior. He was named to the 2014 LHSAA All-Tournament team in 2014, as well as the All-District team. Starwood played the last three years for the Louisiana Dynasty AAU team, which ranked 11th in the nation in 2014.
"Maxwell has a high IQ for the game. He is an extremely versatile player, whose athleticism and quickness enables him to guard multiple positions. He has the ability to put it on the floor and get to the basket, as well as step out and shoot the basketball. I like how we can utilize his speed especially to create problems for our opponents in defending us in transition."
Moore will join the Green Wave after winning four letters at Mission Bay. The San Diego, California native is ranked as the No. 145 player in the nation according to Rivals.com, which also considers him a three-star recruit. Moore averaged 23 points, six rebounds and two steals as a junior at Mission Bay and is on pace to finish his career with over 1,000 points. The 6-4, 170lb, guard helped his team to the state quarterfinals as a junior, earning Western League MVP honors. Moore was also named to the All-San Diego Second Team by the San Diego Union-Tribune as a sophomore and junior. He played six years for the San Diego All-Stars AAU team.
"Justin is unique talent in which his size, speed and length permit him to flourish in the open court. His natural instincts will allow him to play both positions in the backcourt. Justin is a very polished player and is ready to compete at a high level. I really like how he can attack off the dribble and I think it is important in today's game to have several guys on the floor that can create offensive opportunities for our team."
