NEW ORLEANS – Tulane's bowling team has snagged another rising star for the program, as Claire Turner (Sheridan, Wyoming) signed a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday.
Turner hails from Sheridan, Wyoming, and is set to graduate from Sheridan High School in May of 2016. She brings with her an incredible resume, both on and off the lanes.
"I am very excited for the addition of Claire to the bowling team next fall," stated Tulane bowling head coach Hayley Veitch. "Her talent and experience will make a great impact on the team. I love Claire's dedication to the sport of bowling, which is demonstrated by her traveling many hours each weekend to compete in tournaments."
Turner started her bowling career in Minnesota, where she made the varsity team during the co-ed season as a 7th grader, earning a varsity letter in seventh, eighth, and ninth grade. She was named to the Conference All-Honors team while leading her team in stats. Turner was also the team captain and team stats leader of the girls team, earning All-Conference, All-State, and MVP honors on that team as well.
The Sheridan native left Minnesota after her freshman year at Cathedral High School, moving to the state of Wyoming and Sheridan High School. As a part of the Wyoming State Youth Bowling Association, Turner participated in many tournaments throughout her three years at Sheridan. She earned second place honors in 2013 and 2015 at the State Jr. Queens tournament, as well as fourth place honors in 2014. She took home individual championships at the 2014 State Singles Pepsi tournament and the 2015 Singles All-Events Scratch tournament, and team championships at the 2014 State and 2015 City Team tournaments.
Outside of high school, Turner competed at AAU Nationals three times, earning a medal all three times. She also competed at USBC Junior Gold Nationals three times, coming very close to making the cut this past summer, missing it by a mere 11 pins. Bowling has been in Claire's blood from a very young age, as she started competing in the USBC Youth Nationals tournament at age eight.
The senior bowler has also been a part of two bowling tours. In the summer before eighth grade, Claire was one of three youth bowlers in a 2000-adult field on the National Amateur Bowlers Tour. She helped lead her squad to a semi-finals qualification. Since moving to Wyoming, she's been a part of the Colorado Mile Hi Junior Scratch Tour all three years, earning the Girls Points Leader title the last two seasons, as well as multiple championships this season and last season.
Outside of bowling, Turner is very active in the community and in extra-curricular activities. She has been an active participant in National Honor Society since her induction in 2014, as well as a leader in a Leadership Seminar called Link.
Turner has volunteered with multiple organizations as well throughout her high school career, including Kids Against Hunger, Road & Community Cleanup, nursing homes, Holy Name Youth Group, Wyoming Women's USBC and high-school tutoring services.
If all of this wasn't enough, the Sheridan native also held two jobs and an internship during her four years. Turner was a Hostess at Perkins restaurant, a Receptionist at Wyoming Carburetor & Tool, and an Intern at LeRoy Family Dentistry.
"Claire has a long list of bowling accomplishments to her name that I am most impressed with. Claire performs well on the lanes and in the classroom, and makes time to help in the community. Overall, Claire is an ideal fit for the Tulane athletic culture, and I cannot wait to see her excel," added Veitch.
Turner will join the Tulane bowling squad in the fall of 2016, looking to help the Green Wave continue their rise on the collegiate bowling scene that this team has maintained over the past few seasons.
