BATON ROUGE, La. –The Tulane men's basketball team got back to within two late in the game, but was unable to close it out, falling at Southern University 90-82 Thursday night at F.G. Clark Activity Center. Sophomore Dylan Osetkowski notched his second double-double in three games with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Malik Morgan led the way with 18 points. Southern saw five players score in double figures with Adrian Rodgers pacing the Jaguars with 20 points.
Southern (2-1) seemed to control the pace early, but the Green Wave (1-2) put together a 9-0 run to go up by as many as seven early in the game. Tulane took an eight-point lead with 11:15 left in the first half after a free throw from Osetkowski, but the team picked up five straight fouls over the next three-and-a-half minutes, which also resulted in a scoring drought for the Green Wave. The Jaguars took advantage of the lull, putting up nine straight points to regain their early lead.
Southern used another nine straight points in the closing minutes of the first half to be up at the break, but four consecutive points by freshman Blake Paul made it a two-possession game at 39-35 at the half. Play remained close with Southern in control in the second half. The Jaguars led by as many as 11 in the second period. Tulane was able to tie it up early on, but was never able to get closer than two the rest of the night.
Seven straight points by the Green Wave, including a three-point play from senior Louis Dabney, got Tulane within two points with 24 seconds remaining in the game. Freshman Von Julien fouled Christopher Hyder on the following possession and he made both shots. After a missed three by Morgan, Paul attempted to foul on the other end, but was called for the flagrant foul when he wrapped up Shawn Prudhomme, which gave the Jaguars four extra points with three seconds on the clock. Dabney finished with 18 points for the Green Wave, who out-rebounded Southern 38-26 in the game and shot 52.0-percent from the field.
The Jaguars capitalized on 15 Tulane turnovers, scoring 36 points on the miscues. Hyder finished the game with 15 points, while Jared Sam added 17 points and seven assists.
The Green Wave return to action on Sunday, Nov. 22 as they host Appalachian State as part of the Music Challenge. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse.
