Tulane knocks off Panthers, 63-49

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's basketball team returned to action Monday night, knocking off the Prairie View A&M Panthers, 63-49, at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse. Senior Louis Dabney led the Green Wave with 24 points, while Admassu Williams paced the Panthers with 13 points.
It was a slow start to the night or both teams, but Tulane (6-4) jumped out to a 10-4 lead early on. Prairie View A&M (0-9) was able to get back to within one with 8:09 on the clock, but the Green Wave kept a two-possession lead at the halftime break, 24-19. Dabney neared double figures in the opening period with nine points, as the Panthers shot just 28.6-percent from the field.
While play remained close to open the second half, a three from Dabney with 13:28 remaining in the game sparked an 11-0 run for the Green Wave over the next 4:19. Prairie View A&M's Zachary Hamilton did his best to shift the momentum back in his team's favor, hitting back-to-back threes to get them within six. Five straight points from Dabney and an emphatic windmill dunk from freshman Melvin Frazier helped keep the difference in double figures for the remainder of the game.
The Green Wave forced Prairie View A&M to commit 20 turnovers in the game, and capitalized on the mistakes by scoring 25 points off the mishaps. Tulane had 12 steals in the game, redshirt junior Malik Morgan tallied four to go with his nine points on the night.
Tulane was plagued early on by unforced errors and committed 17 turnovers in the game. The Green Wave finished the night shooting just 44.2-percent from the field, while Prairie View A&M shot 28.6-percent.
Dabney's point total marked the first time a Tulane player has scored over 20 points this season. Sophomore Dylan Osetkowski led the way for the Green Wave on the boards with 11, reaching double figures in the category for the fifth time this season.
Tulane has a quick turnaround this week as the team travels to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to take on the Tar Heels Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. CT.
