NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's basketball team kept things close throughout the night, but was unable to overcome the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, falling 76-68 Saturday evening at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse. Senior Louis Dabney led the Green Wave with 15 points, while redshirt junior Malik Morgan did not miss a shot en-route to a 14-point night. Georgia Tech saw four players in double figures, led by 18 points from Marcus Georges-Hunt.
Tulane (5-4) led early in the game, but Georgia Tech (6-2) took advantage of a scoring lull by the Green Wave and went on a 17-4 tear to take an eight-point lead midway through the first half. Tulane quickly responded with eight straight points, including back-to-back buckets in the paint from freshman Kain Harris to tie things at 23.
Both teams again traded runs before the half, but a late layup but Nick Jacobs gave the Yellow Jackets a one-point lead at the break, 39-38. Jacobs led all scorers with 13 first-half, while Dabney tallied 11 in the first period for the Green Wave.
Georgia Tech opened the second half on a 9-3 run to take its largest lead of the day at 10 points, and didn't let the Green Wave get closer than five until there was under four minutes to play in the game. Back-to-back buckets from Morgan made it a one-possession game at 67-64 with 3:34 left, but Georges-Hunt got one to fall nearing the two-minute mark and Charles Mitchell hit a jumper to make it a two-possession game with 1:15 to play.
The Green Wave were forced to foul late and unable to get any closer than six points the rest of the way. Georgia Tech made the most of Tulane's 16 turnovers in the game, putting up 20 points on the Green Wave mistakes.
Jacobs finished the game with 15 points, while Adam Smith added 13 and Mitchell earned his eighth double-double of the year with 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets. Dylan Osetkowski was Tulane's leader on the boards, grabbing 11 and adding seven points.
The Green Wave will have a week off from games and return to the court Monday, Dec. 14 to host Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m. before a two-game road swing.
