Baseball Shut Out by No. 15 UCF, 8-0

NEW ORLEANS - Tulane baseball fell behind early on Saturday against No. 15 UCF and could not put any runs on the board as the Green Wave were shut out by the Knights, 8-0, in rainy conditions at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Tulane (23-15, 4-7) allowed two unearned runs in the first inning behind an error and a passed ball before junior hurler Emerson Gibbs gave up a solo shot to UCF's (26-14, 5-6) Derrick Salberg in the third. Gibbs (3-2) pitched well through the next five innings, as the righty totaled 8.0 innings while striking out six. But Tulane's bats could not generate offense with UCF's Zach Rodgers on the mound, who tossed a complete game.
"I thought it was a bad first inning, as we gave up two runs," stated Tulane baseball head coach David Pierce. "You don't want to start the game with an error. You don't want to walk guys there. [At the plate], I just thought we were late on the fastball and early on the breaking ball, and that's a bad combination for hitting. [Zach Rodgers] is good. He competes really well and he throws a lot of strikes."
Rodgers (7-0) fanned 11 and walked only three for the win. Tulane posted seven base runners during the contest, with sophomore Hunter Williams pacing the squad with a 2-for-4 performance at the dish. However, no Green Wave runner got past second base on an evening where rain fell during most of the game.
In the top of the ninth, UCF posted five runs on five hits to stretch their lead to 8-0. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, freshman Jackson Johnson walked and Williams collected his second hit on the evening, but both were left stranded when the game concluded.
Junior Richard Carthon picked up the only other hit for Tulane during the game.
Redshirt junior Alex Massey (3-2, 3.10 ERA, 40 Ks) will pitch in the 1pm CT rubber match between the two teams on Sunday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. UCF has not yet named a starting pitcher.
During each game during the UCF series, Tulane's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be collecting money in the concourse of Greer Field at Turchin Stadium for their new initiative, Waves for Wisdom. The initiative aims to raise money to provide school supplies to the less privileged hometowns of Green Wave student-athletes. The money raised this weekend will be used to purchase calculators for students in Kitale, Republic of Kenya, the hometown of Tulane cross country and track and field student-athlete Moses Aloiloi.
On Sunday, there will be Kids Day, which gives members of the Riptide's Kids Club the opportunity to stand next to their favorite player during the national anthem while also running the bases postgame. To sign your child up for the Riptide's Kids Club, call 504-247-1238 or visit the Tulane Marketing Tent on the main concourse at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The sixth set of Tulane baseball trading cards will be passed out on Sunday, as well. Players, coaches and staff featured on the cards will be available for postgame autographs.
Tickets to any home Tulane baseball game, or any other Green Wave sporting event, can be purchased by calling 504-861-WAVE (9283). Tickets can also be purchased by visiting the James W. Wilson, Jr. Center's first floor ticket office.
