NEW ORLEANS - Tulane baseball struggled out of the gate against USF on Friday night in a key American Athletic Conference matchup at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, and the Bulls never let up, as the Green Wave dropped the contest, 12-0.
Tulane (29-19, 9-10) fell behind in the top of the first, as USF (30-19-1, 11-8) scored twice before posting another run in the third. The Green Wave couldn't manage to get to USF starter Jimmy Herget, who allowed just five hits across 6.0 innings while striking out eight. The Bulls added a run in the eighth before exploding for eight runs in the top of the ninth.
"We didn't do a good job defensively, we didn't pitch well enough to win and we sure didn't hit well enough to win," stated Tulane baseball head coach David Pierce. "There's a lot of frustration right now, but the thing is, and all I can tell the guys, is that they're in a position to play for something late in the season. They've got to overcome the issues that they're having."
With two outs in the top of the third and trailing 2-0, the Green Wave foiled a double steal attempt when sophomore Jake Rogers nearly gunned down a running Luke Maglich at second. However, Maglich held up in between first and second while fellow Bull Levi Borders stole third and eventually came home while Maglich danced in a rundown before being called safe back at first.
"This time of the year, you don't work on that every day," added Pierce on the play. "We work on it in spring training and we do our first and third defense once a week. That's a play, when we know there are two outs, we have to tag the runner before."
Sophomore Corey Merrill threw 7.0 innings of six-hit ball, but walked five. Merrill (4-4) fanned seven. Tulane had an opportunity to put a run on the board in the top of the first when Herget (8-2) walked Rogers, who then advanced to third on a passed ball and a groundout, but he was left stranded. In the bottom of the second, senior Garrett Deschamp walked and sophomore Jake Willsey singled, but were also left stranded.
Sophomore Hunter Hope, who pinch hit for Willsey in the bottom of the ninth, was the only runner to reach third base after Rogers in the first, when he doubled with one out before moving within 90 feet of spoiling USF's shutout on a groundout.
In addition to Hope and Willsey, the Green Wave picked up a multi-hit night from senior Tyler Wilson, who paced the team with a 2-for-4 performance. Sophomores Stephen Alemais and Lex Kaplan and junior Richard Carthon also recorded base hits in the contest.
Redshirt junior Alex Massey (5-3, 3.31 ERA, 54 Ks) will get the start on Saturday, opposite USF's Ryan Valdes (5-1, 2.90 ERA, 54 Ks). Neither team has named a starter for Sunday's contest.
Coca-Cola is sponsoring the series against USF. On Saturday there will be oil change giveaways from Car Doc on Friday and Saturday. Fans will also be allowed to receive $4 off each service with their ticket stub at Car Doc.
In addition to the Car Doc giveaways on Saturday, there will be special performances throughout the game by the ZOOperstars!.
Tulane will honor members of the 2005 College World Series team on Saturday, as well, marking the 10 year anniversary of the Green Wave's last trip to Omaha. USF head coach Mark Kingston and assistant coach Billy Mohl coached and played, respectively, for the Green Wave in 2005.
