NEW ORLEANS - In what has become a common theme since his arrival on the Tulane University campus last fall, Green Wave cross country standout Moses Aloiloi was named The American Athletic Conference Runner of the Week after posting an individual win during the Jaguar Opener last Friday in Mobile, Alabama.
A sophomore from Kitale, Republic of Kenya, Aloiloi picked up the weekly honor after clocking a time of 18:39.8 in the 6K event. The award was his first of the 2015 season and the third of his career as he garnered the distinction last season on Sept. 2 and again on Oct. 7.
"We got off to a good start, and Moses' performance on Friday evening was key for us," Tulane head coach Eric Peterson said. "It set the tone for himself individually, and it also established or perhaps reestablished himself as one of our team's leaders. He's been recognized for this award multiple times in the past, I'm proud of him for running as well as he did and I'm excited for him to receive this kind of recognition."
Aloiloi's effort during the Jaguar Opener helped the Green Wave win the team title, edging host South Alabama by 14 points and finishing 49 better than Florida A&M. The reigning Louisiana Runner and Freshman of the Year held a commanding advantage for most of the second half of the race and faced a charging Nathan Riech down the stretch as the South Alabama runner sprinted down the stretch in an attempt to close the gap. Aloiloli, however, never broke stride and edged Riech by nearly two seconds.
Aloiloi and the Green Wave return to action on Saturday, Sept. 19, when Tulane travels to Seattle, Washington, to participate in the Sundodger Cross Country Invitational. The women's team is set to start at 11 a.m. with the men scheduled to start a half hour later.
Following the trip to the West Coast, the Wave will take part in the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 2 and the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, on Oct. 17 before competing in The American Championship on Oct. 31 in Grimesland, North Carolina.
