NEW ORLEANS – Despite dominating the boards and scoring nearly half its points in the paint, the Tulane men's basketball team was unable to match the three-point shooting of the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, falling 81-67 in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Dylan Osetkowski notched his sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Tulsa was led by Pat Brit's 27 points.
Tulane (7-10, 0-4 American) went up 12-3 to start the game but Tulsa (10-6, 2-2 American) used a steady push to get back in it. The Golden Hurricane used five threes on eight possessions to tie things up at 20 with 12:23 remaining in the first half, and immediately took the lead on a Rashard Ray steal and layup.
The two teams traded leads on every possession for the next six minutes, but Tulsa closed out the opening period on an 11-4 run to hold a 45-39 lead at the break. Osetkowski neared a double-double with 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half, while Brit also impressed with 17 first-half points. Tulane more than doubled up Tulsa on the boards, out-rebounding the Golden Hurricane 15-7.
Tulsa's hot shooting continued in the second half, while the Green Wave struggled to get their shots to fall. The Golden Hurricane finished the game shooting 65.0-percent from beyond the arc, its highest percentage of the night, as it shot 58.5-percent from the field and 42.9-percent from the free throw line.
Despite Tulane's efficiency in the paint, it was not enough to match the success Tulsa had from the outside. The Green Wave finished the game with a 45-22 rebounding advantage, scoring 34 of its points from the paint. Neither team hit the double-digit mark in turnovers, and Tulane improved from the free throw line, shooting 61.9-percent.
Senior Louis Dabney added 11 points for the Green Wave, while redshirt junior Malik Morgan tallied 10 and freshman Kain Harris came off the bench to score 11. Freshman Melvin Frazier grabbed seven rebounds in the game.
James Woodard, who missed last game for Tulsa, added 21 points and Shaquille Harrison joined him in double figures with 11.
It's another quick turnaround for Tulane as the team travels to Tampa to take on USF Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
