NEW ORLEANS -- Seniors Joy Jason and Ellie Sills celebrated Senior Day with four combined top-three finishes Saturday morning at the Reily Center Natatorium, but LSU overpowered Tulane swimming & diving by a margin of 161-79.Â
"I thought the meet went very well," head coach Katie Robinson said. "The women swam with a lot of heart, which is what we really wanted to see. It was great to get so many second, third and fourth place finishes when we didn't win an event. The women showed that they continue to race hard, even against tough competition."
The Green Wave honored its graduating student-athletes, Jason and Sills, with a ceremony between events. Jason, from Port Allen, La., swam to a third place finish in the 100 breast (1:05.76) and was part of Tulane's 400 medley relay team, which included Sills, that finished third (3:50.64). Sills, a native of Suwanee, Ga., finished third in the 200 IM (2:08.82) and third in the 100 fly (56.88).
"I was so happy to celebrate our seniors," Robinson said. "Ellie and Joy have come so far since their freshman year, and we had a lot of fun in celebrating those two. The energy today was at an all-time high and we had a lot of awesome fans out there."
Freshman Morgan Tacik continued her impressive season with a first place finish in the 1000 free (10:19.40) and a first place finish in the 500 free (5:02.72). Freshman Olivia Johnson notched two third place finishes - 1000 free (10:26.09) and 500 free (5:10.77) - and sophomore Lena Hayakawa finished second place in the 200 free (1:54.86).
Tulane will return to the Reily Student-Recreation Center Natatorium in New Orleans to compete against Alabama on Friday, Jan 6 at 2 p.m.Â
