NEW ORLEANS – No. 21 Tulane bowling heads to Kenosha, Wisconsin, this weekend for the Warhawk Classic, hosted by University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Sheridan Lanes from Feb. 19-21.
The squad is coming off a very successful weekend in Houston, earning an eighth place finish with a 9-5 record and two bowlers finishing in the top-10 individually in Michelle Ng and Hannah Ryan. Most notably, the ladies went 6-0 in traditional match play on Saturday, doing so for only the second time in Tulane history.
The Warhawk Classic features one of the stiffest fields Tulane will face all season long, as all 10 teams are ranked in the top-25 coming into the weekend. No. 2 Nebraska, No. 5 Central Missouri, No. 6 McKendree, tournament-host No. 7 Wisconsin-Whitewater, No. 8 Stephen F. Austin, No. 11 St. Francis (PA), No. 17 Valparaiso, No. 20 Adelphi and No. 24 Elmhurst make up the very competitive field.
"After coming off an exceptional weekend of bowling, the ladies need to remember the feeling of winning matches and fighting to the last ball of each game," said Tulane bowling head coach Hayley Veitch. "With continued high energy and communication, the team can continue to achieve great results."
The tournament will begin on Friday with five five-game total pinfall Baker matches, starting at 11 a.m. CST. Saturday will see teams compete in five traditional team matches, beginning at 8:35 a.m. CST. The teams will be ranked 1-10 based on total pinfall over the first two days of competition and be seeded into a bracket based on the tournament standings. The tournament will conclude with teams participating in three best four-of-seven bracket matches to determine the tournament champion, beginning at 8:30 a.m. CST on Sunday.
The tournament champion and runner-up teams will receive team awards. Individual awards for the All-Tournament team will be awarded to the top five individual bowlers, based on Saturday's traditional team match results, with the Tournament MVP award given to the top individual bowler. Only bowlers who compete in all five traditional team matches are eligible for the All-Tournament team and Tournament MVP honors.
Ng leads all Green Wave bowlers in games played (38), total pins (7,763) and pin average (204.29). The Singapore native was one of six bowlers to set new or tie their season-highs this past weekend in Houston, along with Ryan, Angela Falgoust, Jessica Quebedeaux, Danyn Terry and Hannah Harrison. Quebedeaux, Terry and Harrison set new career-highs for themselves as well.
Tulane will have at least three weeks off before its next tournament, which could be the USBC Sectional from March 11-13. BOWL.com will announce the USBC Sectional team list on its website on Wednesday, Feb. 24. The Green Wave will make the cut if it cracks the top 64 in the rankings on www.collegebowling.com. Tulane is currently ranked No. 72, without including this past weekend's results.
If the squad is not eligible to compete in that tournament, the team will enjoy a full month off before taking a return trip to the Music City Classic in Smyrna, Tennessee, from March 18-20.
