Aug 21, 2016 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS -- With the 2016-17 school year quickly approaching, director of track and field and cross country, Eric Peterson, has announced the fall 2016 cross country schedule. This year, Tulane is slated to make trips to Memphis, LSU and Stanford, as well as a host of other competitions.
"I am really looking forward to getting back to work with our athletes and excited about the competition schedule that we have put together," Peterson said. "This schedule will challenge and test every athlete at a high level and will also give every athlete in our program the opportunity to contribute to our program's success."
The Green Wave open up the season with a Labor Day weekend road trip the Brooks Memphis Twilight, hosted by the University of Memphis. The following weekend, Tulane will return to New Orleans for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival in Lafreniere Park.
Peterson and his squad will close out September with a trip up I-10 for the LSU Cross Country Invitational before heading to the Stanford Cross Country Invite in California the first weekend in October. Tulane will then wrap up the regular season at the ISU Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
The 2016 American Athletic Conference Championship will be hosted by the University of Cincinnati in West Chester, Ohio on Oct. 29. Qualifying runners will advance to the NCAA South Central Regional in Fayetteville, Ark., followed by the NCAA Championship on Nov. 19.
This year, Peterson and his staff welcome a veteran team of runners for the 2016 fall season as well as five incoming freshmen. Mckenzie Melius, who competed indoor track and field for Tulane last year, will also join the cross country ranks for her sophomore year.
The women's team is coming off of Tulane's highest finish at the NCAA South Central Regional since 2007, where each runner posted a personal-best time, some smashing their previous top marks. The Green Wave men are also looking to improve on a sixth-place American conference finish.
Cross country reported to campus on Friday, Aug. 19 for a morning of informational meetings discussing team goals and scheduling for the year before opening up their first practice that evening.
