BATON ROUGE – The runners of Tulane cross country posted another week of successful efforts on the turf at the LSU Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning at Highland Road Park in Baton Rouge. The women notched a second-place team finish on one-two placings from juniors Emma Newton and Lauren Bartels while the men finished in third, marking the third consecutive week Tulane has finished near the top of the standings.
"I'm really excited about the way Emma Newton and Lauren Bartels competed today," associate head cross country coach Michael Nussa said. "They went to the lead a little after one mile and worked together to put the race away. Emma took a big step forward today, winning the first race of her season. McKenzie Melius, Sarah Cella, Mary Catherine Stovall and Erika Chelales all made progress today. We still have work to do at the no. 3, 4 and 5 spots but we are improving each week."
Newton and Bartels led the Green Wave efforts on the morning, coming up with the top two overall finishes in the women's race. Newton notched a time of 17:54.29 in her first meet of the year to land herself at the top of the podium, while Bartels finished just behind for a second-place finish. Freshmen Mckenzie Melius, Mary Catherine Stovall, Paige Fatland and Evelyn Bentch set personal bests in the meet.
On the men's side, sophomore Emmanuel Rotich finished in the top two for the third consecutive week, leading the Tulane men to a third-place finish.
The Green Wave take next weekend off before traveling to California for the Stanford Cross Country Invitational on Oct. 1.
