Sep 29, 2016 | Women's Bowling
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane bowling is poised to face its most competitive schedule to date in 2016-17 with the goal to compete for the national championship right in its own backyard.
Tulane is set to serve as the host for both the 2017 NCAA National Collegiate Championship and the 2017 USBC Collegiate Championships in Baton Rouge, La. The NCAA Championship, featuring the nation's top eight teams, takes place April 13-15, while the USBC Championships, featuring 16 teams, takes place April 20-23. Both championships will be held at the Baton Rouge River Center.
The Green Wave opens the season on Oct. 21-23 at the Wildcat Invitational in Orlando, Fla. The tournament will feature intense competition, including host Bethune-Cookman, as well as Nebraska and Arkansas State, who finished last season ranked first and second, respectively.
"This will be an exciting tournament. We get to compete in Orlando and against a very competitive field. We're diving straight into the deep end with this one," stated head coach Hayley Veitch.
Following the season opener, Tulane will spend three back-to-back weekends on the road.
On Nov. 4-6, the Olive and Blue heads to Houston for the annual Track Kat Klash Tournament held by Sam Houston State. The ladies will then travel to Brandon, Miss. on Nov. 11-13 to compete in the Jackson State Invitational. This marks the first time that Tulane will compete in this tournament. The following weekend (Nov. 18-20), the Green Wave heads north to Millsboro, Del. for Maryland-Eastern Shore's Hawk Classic and the chance to compete against top teams from outside of the southeast.
The Green Wave close out the fall season at home on Dec. 2-4, hosting the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational at AMF All Star Lanes in Kenner, La.
Tulane returns to action on Jan. 20-22, at the KU Invitational in Reading, Pa. This will be the first time that Tulane has competed at the KU Invitational, after being forced to withdraw from this tournament last year due to inclement weather.
The Green Wave then compete in two back-to-back tournaments, starting with the SFA Jacks Invitational on Feb. 10-12, where regional rival and reigning NCAA Champion Stephen F. Austin will serve as host. The following weekend (Feb. 17-19), Tulane travels to Chicago for Valparaiso's Crusader Classic. This tournament marks the last opportunity for the team to qualify for the USBC Intercollegiate Sectionals on March 10-11.
The Green Wave finish the regular season on March 17-19 at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic. This tournament hosted by Vanderbilt promises to feature some of the best teams from around the nation.
Coach Veitch's squad looks to start its postseason run on March 25-26 at the Southland League Championships. The Wave finished sixth at last year's tournament and were knocked out of contention for a berth to the NCAA Championships by the eventual national champion Ladyjacks.
"We are definitely ready to roll. I think this team is the most prepared I've ever seen a team in five years with Tulane bowling. I'm excited to see what happens," remarked Veitch.
