MEMPHIS – The Green Wave cross country squad opened up their 2016 season on the night of Saturday, September 3 at the 14th annual Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic, hosted by Christian Brothers University. Despite being down a few runners, Tulane made a good showing to start off the year and landed three competitors in the top ten overall.
On the men's side…
Sophomore Emmanuel Rotich spearheaded the Green Wave effort in Memphis, coming up with a second-place finish in the men's four-mile race. Rotich finished with a time of 19:11.25, just one tenth of a second behind Alabama's leading runner. Junior Moses Aloiloi came in three spots back of Rotich, ending in fifth place on his time of 19:54.83. The men ended the weekend with an eighth-place team finish.
"Emmanuel [Rotich] was really the performance of the weekend for both teams. Both he and Moses [Aloiloi] got out comfortably in a pack of about ten runners early on in the race and made a decision about a mile and a half in to go chase down the leaders. Emmanuel closed about an 80-meter gap on the race leader over the final mile, and with 400 meters to go had an opportunity to try and win. He didn't quite get there, but he competed incredibly well when he could've easily made a decision to not go for it." –Associate Head Cross Country Coach Michael Nussa
On the women's side…
Junior Lauren Bartels led the Tulane women in their season opener, finishing in eighth place and setting a personal best on her time of 17:38.93. Freshman Sarah Cella also helped lead the team to a ninth-place overall finish, putting up a 43rd place effort in her first collegiate meet. In addition to the top two finishers, four other Tulane runners also put up lifetime-best times to open the 2016 season.
"We knew coming in that Lauren was probably going to lead our team. She did a really nice job of getting in a good position early on in the race and continuing to move up all the way through in a race with a few really good teams. Sarah Cella also did a good job as a freshman in her first race, being our number two runner." –Associate Head Cross Country Coach Michael Nussa
