PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With the 2016 cross country season officially underway, the American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league's honors for this week. After a second-place effort at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic on Saturday, sophomore Emmanuel Rotich was selected as the American Conference Male Runner of the Week.
"Emmanuel kicked his cross season off in strong fashion and I'm happy to see him recognized for his effort," director of track and field and cross country Eric Peterson said. "We still have a lot of work to do in order to continue improving but this is a good starting place for him."
Rotich led the Green Wave in their first race of the season, finishing the highest of all the Tulane runners on his time of 19:11.25. After starting the race at the middle of the pack, Rotich made the decision to chase down the leaders, closing an incredible gap and taking the race down to the wire. At the finish line, he was just one tenth of a second back from the top runner, defending SEC cross country champion Antibahs Kosgei of Alabama.
The second-place finish is Rotich's highest mark since coming to Tulane last year.
Rotich and the rest of the Tulane squad will be back in action on Saturday morning for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival at Lafreniere Park in Metairie.
