Baseball Set to Open Fall Practice
Oct 4, 2017 | Baseball
This story has been updated to reflect schedule changes as a result of the threat of Tropical Storm Nate
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball is set to open fall training, as the Green Wave begins their second season under head coach Travis Jewett.
Fall practices begin Tuesday, Oct. 10 with a workout at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Tulane was set to begin fall ball Friday, but the threat of Tropical Storm Nate forced the start date to be moved back to Tuesday.
 Â
Tulane returns 18 players to the roster this season and welcomes 22 newcomers for the fall. Junior outfielder Grant Witherspoon is the leading returning hitter, batting .299 with 48 runs, five home runs, 10 doubles, 36 RBI and 10 stolen bases last year. Redshirt senior infielder/outfielder Matt Rowland, junior outfielder Tyler Heinrichs, sophomore outfielder Kobi Owen and sophomore infielders Sal Gozzo and Kody Hoese also lead the returning position players group.
Â
Sophomore right-hander Chase Solesky, who went 5-3 with a 3.84 ERA in 68.0 innings last year, and redshirt senior Sam Bjorngjeld, who pitched in 53.1 innings across 21 games with eight starts, anchor the returning pitching staff.
Â
The Green Wave newcomer class includes 13Â incoming freshmen and nine transfers. Among the transfers, six either began at or moved from four-year schools. The newcomers represent 13 states and British Columbia, including five student-athletes from the state of Louisiana.
Fall practices are open to the public, and times are subject to change.Â
