NEW ORLEANS – Following a successful showing at last weekend's American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, Tulane's track & field squad will now turn its attention to the outdoor season and the Green Wave's sole home meet of the year. Tulane will kick off the outdoor schedule hosting the Early Bird Twilight on Friday, March 3 at Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park.
QUOTE
"It's becoming tradition for us to kick off the outdoor season with a home meet. I'm looking forward to seeing how well our women's team transitions from the indoor season to the outdoor season, and I'm really excited for the guys, knowing that his is going to be their first competitive opportunity since last year. I know the distance runners are also looking forward to getting started with the track season after finishing as strong as they did in the fall. We're expecting some good weather and good competition from the local universities that are participating, and I think it's going to be a great afternoon."
--Director of Track & Field Eric Peterson
THE MEET
Tulane will take on a handful of local competition in Friday afternoon's meet, welcoming Dillard, Loyola, Southeastern, UNO and Xavier to Tad Gormley for the Early Bird Twilight. In the season opener, the Green Wave will see performances from the majority of the 2017 roster, with 27 women and 14 men competing across nearly twenty events.
Friday's meet will also serve as the outdoor debut for a dozen Tulane student-athletes, including eight women who just wrapped up their freshmen indoor seasons.
Redshirt senior Alyssa Applebee, who narrowly missed out on an NCAA Indoor National Championship appearance in the pole vault, will lead the Tulane jumpers on the season, while sophomore Jessica Duckett, fresh off a silver-medal finish in the 60m hurdles at last weekend's conference meet, will look to break a few more hurdle records in her sophomore year. Redshirt senior Daliadiz Ortiz, who currently ranks second on Tulane's all-time list in the javelin, will lead Tulane in the throws alongside Taylor Potts, who holds the school record in the shot put.
On the men's side, Tulane will see the return of distance runners Moses Aloiloi, Joshua Cheruyot, Pierce Hill and Emmanuel Rotich, who posted a second-place finish at the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships in the fall for the men's highest placing in a conference meet in over a decade. The Green Wave also welcome freshman Raymond Kibet, a Kenyan sprinter who last competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
UP NEXT
The Green Wave have next weekend off before heading west to the Louisiana Classics hosted by UL-Lafayette on Friday, March 17.
