BATON ROUGE, La. – After 24 days away from the links, the Tulane women's golf team returns to action this weekend at the 2017 LSU Tiger Golf Classic in the first of back-to-back-tournaments to close out the regular season.
With rainy weather in the forecast for the weekend, the format of the 54-hole tournament has changed to 36 holes set to be played on Friday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start and the final round on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Tulane tackles another stellar group of competitors with 10 teams in the 15-team field ranked in the top 60 -- No. 11 Duke, No. 15 Arkansas, No. 19 Oklahoma State, No. 29 North Carolina State, No. 37 SMU, No. 43 Clemson, No. 50 Kentucky, No. 53 Denver and No. 58 Missouri. The host Tigers enter the weekend ranked 63rd.
The Green Wave enter the tournament ranked 81st and is slated to open play with the lineup of sophomore Laura Munoz at No. 1, senior Belen Goicoechea at No. 2, sophomore Sofia Goicoechea at No. 3, redshirt freshman Elise Genoux at No. 4 and freshman Haydyn Gibson at No. 5. Fellow rookie Gabrielle Correia is set to compete as an individual.
Head coach Lorne Don said he looks for his squad to bring the consistency needed to be among the teams atop the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon.
"We've really working towards seeing three good rounds from the players who are in the lineup," said Don. "We haven't quite got there yet, but we've been close and had a few really good team rounds this semester. It would be great to go to Baton Rouge and be able to put together a great tournament as a team."
Don added it will be key for his young squad to play well with the team's next tournament, the Clemson Invitational, just five days after competing in Baton Rouge. The Clemson Invitational is set for March 31-April 2 at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C.
"The focus right now is that we have back-to-back tournaments and we're really just going to use that to try to prepare and get ready for our conference championship," said Don.
The American Athletic Conference Championship is April 16-18 at the Hammock Beach at Golf Resort in Palm Coast, Fla.
