NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball dropped the series finale to West Virginia, 18-5, Sunday afternoon at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The Green Wave (3-8) clinched the series with 9-8 and 6-0 wins Friday and Saturday, respectively, but on Sunday the Mountaineers (7-4) scored 18 runs on 20 hits to win the third game. WVU plated three runs in the first inning and five in the third, then added eight in the middle frames and a run in the ninth. Tulane scored twice in each of the second and third innings, and added a run in the eighth.
Â
The Green Wave plays host to Louisiana-Lafayette Tuesday at Greet Field at Turchin Stadium. Tickets are available at the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Center. Live video and live stats will be available at www.TulaneGreenWave.com, and the game will be broadcast on 88.3 FM WRBH.
Â
"We were chasing four (runs) right out of the gate, but we answered back with a big home run. But every time we scored, they scored," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "It got to the point where it just eventually got out of control. You have to give West Virginia a lot of credit. They had their backs against the wall, and we had a chance to complete the series, but they were obviously against that."
Â
Tulane answered WVU's four-run first with a two-run home run to straightaway center field by Jeremy Montalbano in the bottom of the second. It was the first home run of the season for the senior catcher, who had to leave the game in the fifth inning with an injury.
Â
In the third inning, trailing 9-2, Jarret DeHart drove a bases-loaded two-run double down the right field line to make the score 9-4. The Green Wave loaded the bases with a leadoff single by Matt Rowland, and walks to Grant Witherspoon and Hunter Williams to set up the scoring. Witherspoon went 1-for-2 to extend his hit streak to seven games, while Williams saw hit nine-game hit streak come to an end, though he has reached base in all 11 contests.
Â
Tulane added a run in the bottom of the eighth when freshman left fielder Michael Kirsch, a defensive replacement, walked and scored on a throwing error to first base. It was Kirsch's first career run, while fellow freshman Kobi Owen, who entered the game to play center field, picked up his first career hit on a single in the eighth. Sophomore Tyler Heinrichs singled in the seventh for his first hit of the season, and freshman Grant Mathews recorded three putouts at first base in his first game action.
Â
Ross Massey (0-2) took the loss for the Green Wave, while WVU starter Conner Dotson (3-0) pitched 5.0 innings to earn the win.
