NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball senior Hunter Williams added another honor to his stellar resume when he was named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Baseball First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Williams, the American Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year, is just the second Tulane baseball student-athlete to earn first-team Academic All-America honors, and 10th Green Wave baseball player to earn Academic All-America accolades overall.
The West Monroe, La., native received his bachelor's degree in neuroscience from Tulane University in May, and graduated with full honors with a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average. He was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 Team selection.
On the field, Williams batted .357, recording 87 hits, 41 RBI, 45 runs scored, 18 doubles, 11 home runs and 140 total bases, compiling a .574 slugging percentage and a .404 on-base percentage. He ranks 16th in the nation in hits and 32nd in total bases, and leads the American Athletic Conference in hits, while ranking second in batting average, doubles and total bases.
A first baseman who started all 58 games this year, Williams was a part of a school-record 65 double plays turned by the Green Wave defense, contributing on an individual program-high 61 double plays. He recorded multiple hits in 29 games and multiple RBI 10 times. He reached base safely in 53 of 58 contests, and hit safely in 14 straight games from April 2 through April 23. Williams was selected to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team in 2015 and 2016, and was awarded a Conference USA Academic Medal in 2014.
Williams is the first Tulane baseball student-athlete to earn first-team Academic All-America honors since Neal Comarda in 1978. He is Tulane baseball's first Academic All-American since Jeremy Schaffer and Brandon Boudreaux in 2012.
