Aug 7, 2017 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS -- With the 2017-18 academic year just weeks away, Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Eric Peterson announced the fall 2017 cross country schedule. This year, Tulane is slated to make trips to Temple, LSU, Notre Dame and the University of Louisville, as well as a host of other competitions.
"The schedule exposes our team to both regional and national levels of competition," Peterson said. "It's important for the growth and development of our program to have a challenging slate of competition, and our schedule clearly accomplishes that desire and need."
The Green Wave opens up the season when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa. for the Temple University Cross Country Invitational on Friday, Sept. 1. The following weekend, Tulane returns to New Orleans for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival in Lafreniere Park.
Peterson and the Green Wave then travel to Baton Rouge for the LSU Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16, before heading to the Joe Piane Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational in South Bend, Ind., the last weekend in September. Tulane concludes its regular season at the Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Ky., hosted by Louisville on Saturday, Oct. 14.
The 2017 American Athletic Conference Championships will be hosted by Temple on Oct. 28 in Philadelphia. Qualifying runners will advance to the NCAA South Central Regional in College Station, Texas, on Nov. 10, followed by the NCAA Championship on Nov. 18 in Louisville.
Peterson's men's squad comes off a very successful 2016 campaign, in which it earned a second-place finish in the AAC, the program's highest conference ranking since the 1990's and its best since joining the league in 2014. Junior Emmanuel Rotich, who was named Male Runner of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writer's Association, returns to the program after recording seven-consecutive top-three finishes, school records in the 8K and 10K, a gold-medal effort at the South Central Regional, and earning a trip to the NCAA Cross Country National Championships in 2016.
The women's team raced to a ninth-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional last season, its highest finish at a regional meet since the 1990's. Seniors Emma Newton and Lauren Bartels return and will look to help the squad continue achieving top marks.
Cross country reports to campus on Wednesday, Aug. 16 for meetings to discuss team goals and the season schedule, before holding its first practice Thursday.
